Community Feedback Guides Next Steps for Fancyburg Park Master Plan
Upper Arlington Parks & Recreation recently wrapped up Phase II of the Fancyburg Park Master Plan, gathering input from more than 600 residents through an online survey. This round of engagement focused on updated design concepts and proposed amenities developed by The Edge Group, and the feedback received will help guide the next steps in shaping this important community space.
Community Input on the Overall Plan
Residents expressed strong support for many of the park’s proposed features. The natural play areas, a four-season pavilion, and the amphitheater received positive attention, with many seeing them as opportunities to enhance recreation and community gathering. However, some raised concerns about the amphitheater’s potential noise impact on nearby homes and questioned whether it was a necessary addition. Residents stressed the importance of making sure the design and use of the space is appropriate to the neighborhood setting.
One of the more debated elements was the interactive wetland. While some appreciated its educational value and natural feel, others voiced concerns about safety for young children and the potential to attract mosquitoes. It is important that the final design of this space be both safe and visually appealing.
Other recurring themes included the importance of maintaining open green space, preserving mature trees, and improving safety and accessibility. Many residents suggested adding more shaded areas, especially near play equipment, and ensuring that the park is accessible to children of all abilities. There was also strong interest in additional recreational features like pickleball courts, along with amenities such as picnic areas and improved parking.
Playground Design Preferences
When asked to choose between timber and steel or fabric playground structures, 69% of respondents favored the steel and fabric option. While some preferred the natural look of timber for its ability to blend with the surroundings, concerns were raised about its long-term durability and maintenance. The steel and fabric designs were seen as more versatile, engaging, and safer—especially due to integrated shade features and materials that stay cooler in the sun. Several residents also highlighted the importance of offering inclusive play elements and noted appreciation for the existing playground.
Pavilion Design Choices
Survey respondents reviewed three pavilion roof designs and material styles. The Craftsman-style roof design emerged as the most preferred, followed closely by the single-pitch roof. The traditional hip roof design was less popular. Many comments favored designs that feel timeless, welcoming, and complementary to the natural setting of the park.
When it came to materials, the sleek and modern style was slightly more favored over stone and steel, with both options receiving significantly more support than the clean and traditional style. While some appreciated the brightness and openness of the modern design, others expressed concern that ultra-modern elements may not age well. There was clear preference for warm, natural materials like wood and stone that provide a comfortable and inviting feel while still being durable and sustainable.
What Comes Next?
This second phase of community feedback provided valuable insights into what residents want—and don’t want—for the future of Fancyburg Park. The project team will now use this input to refine the master plan and ensure it reflects the community’s priorities.
The feedback from this survey will now be shared with the Upper Arlington Parks & Recreation Advisory Board, followed by a presentation to City Council. These conversations will help guide the final direction of the Fancyburg Park Master Plan. After incorporating input from both groups, a refined design will be developed and shared with the community.
